Through Grandma’s Eyes: The Mother

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news,

my mother would say to me:

Look for the helpers.

You will always find people who are helping.”

-Mr. Rogers-

journal entry:

Sometimes taking photographs feels like intruding.  Mothers talking softly to daughters.  Explaining things.  Daughters asking mothers “why?”  Mothers choosing their words carefully to explain confusing things.  Daughters satisfied with their mother’s answers.  Mothers helping daughters to do things with their tiny hands.  Daughters watching and never missing a thing.  All these things can be captured in a split second in a photograph.  Sometimes you don’t even need more than one photograph to tell a whole story.  Like this one.  Mr. Rogers is right.  No matter what is happening at home or in the world there will always be helpers.  Knowing that someone will help you is comforting to a child.

Knowing that I can tell my family’s stories through photographs is comforting to me.

“Praise the bridge that carried you over.”
