“A photograph is a secret about a secret.”

journal entry:
Keepsake photographs happen in the most unexpected moments. Glancing over as Keeley waited patiently for her cousin Clara to put on her shoes, I saw the sun going down on Keeley’s face. I realized that I had been looking at the amber light just outside of the door. When her face poked in, it was perfect. There is no doubt that a face is more relaxed when it thinks it is alone. I love this age . . . when childhood is fitting a little small but grown-up things seem too big. Sometimes my camera feels like skin.

the spirit always stands still long enough
for the photographer it has chosen.”
